High Tech – Low Cost Security for your Home

It wasn’t that long ago you wanted a home security system, you had to reach out to a large franchise or local company to install it. This could cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars in equipment and monthly monitoring fees. You could easily be paying monthly fees of $50 or more with a minimum service contract 3-5 years. This was guaranteed money for them, even if you want to cancel early or sell your home. If you defaulted, they will put a lien on your property to get their money plus attorney fees. I know because it has happened to me.

Several years later when I took a temporarily marketing job for a local home security business. I found out those monthly monitoring services that they charge you $30+ a month for, the actual cost was between $2-$3. If sure the large Franchise companies pay less than that. But that was when consumers had very few options to choose from.

The last five to seven years have seen an explosion of affordable home security devices that are all connected to the Internet for real-time access and archival of video. In many cases, you don’t need real-time monitoring by a 3rd party service. We all have a cell phone nearby and most security apps have real-time notifications to alert us to an event.

One of the first and most complete DIY home security systems is by a company called SimpliSafe. They also offer several levels of professional monitoring at a very affordable cost if you want that added layer of security. They offer everything from video doorbells, door & window sensors to water intrusion and fire alarms.

For those of us that only need a camera, electronic lock, video doorbell, or a complete system, then there are several manufacturers like Ring, Wyze, and Nest to name a few. The technology today is off the charts. Many devices are completely wireless and battery-powered, with no drilling-no mess. Video cameras today can view in full-Color HD quality day or night and record hours of video on small MicroSD cards with online backups.

Apps now run on your cellphone giving you full control of all your devices. Any many can be integrated with other home devices like Amazon Alexa Echo and Google Nest Hub. Home automation can expand home and security to a whole new level with remote-controlled garage doors, timed lighting and so much more. Today you can have an Internet app-controlled garage door opener and allow Amazon delivery drivers use it to place packages inside your garage. Just think of what tomorrow's technology will bring.
